Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: The Impact of Youth Sports and My Journey as an Athlete and Coach

Youth sports hold a special place in my heart. The profound impact they had on my life, the joy they bring to my own children, and the fulfillment I find in coaching youth basketball for the past decade in Springfield are sources of immense happiness for me.

Let me share a bit of my story. Growing up, I immersed myself in various sports like basketball, baseball, and soccer. As my towering 6 foot 9 frame emerged, basketball quickly became my primary passion. My senior year brought a state championship, and the camaraderie formed with my teammates endures to this day. Recently inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, our team’s legacy is a testament to the transformative power of sports.  Some of my oldest and closest friends I still talk to often were a part of that legendary team (Picture above).

I’ve found deep satisfaction in coaching youth basketball for nearly ten years. The positive impact of sports on young minds cannot be overstated.

Teaching Excellence and Perseverance:

Youth sports instill values of excellence and perseverance. These essential life skills extend beyond the court, shaping resilient individuals prepared to face challenges head-on.

Fostering Healthy Competition:

The experience of competing with peers is invaluable. It cultivates a spirit of healthy competition, teaching kids to strive for their best while respecting their opponents.

Building Team Dynamics:

Being part of a team, whether in victory or defeat, based on merit, is a powerful aspect of youth sports. It lays the foundation for collaborative efforts and the understanding that success is a collective achievement.

My personal journey as a decorated athlete and coach has significantly influenced my perspective. Now, as I embark on a new chapter, seeking to serve the youth of our community on the SPS School Board, I carry with me the profound lessons and values instilled by the world of youth sports.
